Last spring we visited and interviewed people whose lives are deeply connected to Satoyama 里山 (and Satoumi 里海) landscapes to learn about this way of living from different perspectives.

Yamashita-san, a Satoyama lover.
Sakura-san, a hunter.
Miwa-san, an ama diver.
Tsugu-san, a farmer.

People who work and live in close relationships with nature.
They are the people we deeply admire and they are “Living Satoyama”.

We brought those conversations together as a series of four short documentaries.

The word “Satoyama” is often associated with a rural landscape.

We believe that Satoyama is more than a place. To us, Satoyama is a way of being, a way of living in relationship with nature and with one another.

Receiving from nature, and giving back. Living in connection with the people, animals, plants, and being an active part of the ecosystems surrounding us.

This way of thinking does not belong only to the mountains.
It can exist in cities, by the sea, and within the everyday lives of each of us.

Through these documentaries, we hope to share the seeds of satoyama that we found in Yamashita-san, Sakura-san, Miwa-san and Tsugu-san’s words.

Perhaps they might inspire a question:
“What does Satoyama mean to me?”

We hope these stories become an invitation to reflect on that question, and to begin discovering your own Satoyama.

私たちは、里山・里海とともに生きる人々を訪ね、彼らの生き方について、それぞれの視点からお話を伺いました。 

里山を愛する山下さん。 

猟師のさくらさん。 

海女のみわさん。

農家のつぐつぐさん。 

自然と向き合いながら働き、暮らしている人たち。

私たちが心から尊敬する “People Living Satoyama” です。

そして今回、その時のインタビューを4本のショートドキュメンタリーとしてまとめました。

「里山」と聞くと、多くの人は田舎の風景を思い浮かべるかもしれません。 

けれど、私たちは、里山とは、単なる”場所”ではなく、

人と自然が互いに関わり合いながら生きるための“あり方”なのではないか、と考えます。 

自然から受け取り、自然へ返し、

周りの人や生きものたちと関係を結びながら暮らすこと。

その考え方は、山の中だけでなく、都会にも、海辺にも、

そして一人ひとりの日常の中にも存在できるはずです。

このドキュメンタリーを通して、彼らの言葉の中にある「里山の種」を皆さんに届けたいと思っています。

そして、「私にとっての里山ってなんだろう？」

そんな問いを持つきっかけになったら嬉しいです。 

自分の里山を見つける旅のはじまりとして。
